Day 6 09.12.22- Passing time at Twitty's bistro

December 9, 2022

Life of luxury continued.

We (I) got up late. Earthy breakfast at Twitty’s bistro. Steve and I got all ready to go. Bags separated, food packed, sleeping bag in compression bag, backpack ready, sled tied, and then it started to all go wrong.

Weather report came in. Good weather at Low Camp but very windy for the next two days in the further camps which made any move pointless. That meant another day at base camp and at Twitty’s, who, by the way is our Malaysian chef from Samarang.

Which also meant how to occupy the six hours between lunch and dinner; food becoming our major past-time for the moment.

So here came Kenton with a general knowledge card game; then there was time for the Gillette challenge - Rob shaving indoor, Marco shaving outdoor show casing my favorite Gillette razor; and finally a little (3 hours) glacier walk all roped up with Steve, Jason, Sonia and JB. We thought we were going to a famous spot but actually we trekked to the next pee hole.

A note about personal ablutions: all liquids of any kind go into the pee hole, including home made water but also shaving liquid, toothpaste water etc. Solids are collected in bags and get airlifted with any other trash outside Antarctica. You can’t pee on the snow in Antarctica because it doesn’t snow much, and your mark will stay permanently to be admired by future generations. So our trek up the mountain is really a trek from pee hole to pee hole. All this with the aim of keeping Antarctica pristine.

After dinner we did get into a philosophical argument on the true nature of mountaineering . Luckily it was time for bed.

PS :- JB’s name: Jyamchang Bhote
